Life By Design Podcast
Slowly and surely (although it always feels like it's taking far too much time) spring is coming and right behind it will be summer!

Summer means, heat, swimming and spending a lot our time outside.

It also means things like showing more skin, more time at the beach, lounging by the pool and exposing more of your body to other people...which can be stressful.

The fact that terms like 'summer body' exist shows a certain level of concern or importance to having others look at, or at least notice, you.

The fear, pressure or motivation (depending) on how you look at it, can cause people to do crazy things (eat certain ways, train certain ways, starve themselves, etc.) to meet the visual requirements they're trying hard to achieve.

Let us help you. It is possible to lose a significant amount of weight without having to sacrifice your health, life or sanity?

It's not easy, but it can be done and it can be simplified.

The purpose of this podcast is not just creating a successful plan for this year, but getting it right the first time so you don't have to worry about the 'summer bod' conversation ever again.

What we cover:
  • How to understand the physiology of weight loss. If you have a clear understanding of how your body gains and loses weight you will know what to do and won't be tricked by the next upcoming fad.
  • Why fat loss and good health are not opposites. Although weight loss often happens in spite of good health, it's important to realize you can't be healthy and obese or overweight.
  • Weight loss depends on more factors than just calories in vs. calories out. Your hormones, stress levels, macro and micronutrient levels play an important role in helping you shed those pounds.
  • The appropriate time frame to set for yourself and the dangerous effect of undershooting.

On today's show, I'm excited to have with us Lanie Smith.

Lanie is a Registered Art Therapist, owner/founder of Integrative Art Therapy, and a Transformational Wellness Coach. She's watched so many clients learn how to “bring the inside out and the outside in” to allow greater ease and flow in their life.

Her passion is to help you recognize your innate wisdom and beauty as it’s reflected in the trees, mountains, wildlife, and in your creativity.
Creative expression and nature are powerful tools to guide us.

Lanie strives in helping clients discover that inner connection that she believes we all have. Lanie thinks that "Dis-ease and chronic stress are the direct results of misalignment and imbalance" and find that connection within yourself is the way for you to feel more connected and grateful.

The purpose of this podcast is to learn more about what art therapy is and why it may be helpful for you.

What we cover:
  • What is art therapy and how you can leverage art into helping with your happiness.
  • Ways in which you can catch yourself heading down the path to overwhelm and how you can prevent that problem.
  • Why the art you create (not just painting but everything) can be a sign of your current mental state.
  • How everyone is creative and why that doesn't necessarily mean being a painter.
  • Why spending time in nature is a very good idea.
  • Ways that you can become better at listening to yourself and better at being more present with your thoughts and emotions. Being present and learning to understand what is happening in your body, is one of the best ways to find your inner peace.

We know you know that exercise is good for you, that's no longer even debatable.

Unfortunately, most health professionals downplay how powerful meeting the movement requirement is for your body.

Exercise positively influences cancer, diabetes, heart disease, autoimmune disease, etc... basically every health condition is affected in a positive way.

Yes, it's a panacea. Every possible function you can think of in your body improves when you've been exercising.

Most people leave a lot of the benefits of exercise in the tank - meaning... they're not meeting all of the requirements for exercise and could be benefiting even more.

The purpose of this podcast is to discuss where the biggest gaps are in your training and to give you suggestions and tips on how to fill them and get even better than you already are.

What we cover:
  • How does exercise have such a widespread effect on the human body? What are the mechanisms and why is this important for you to know?
  • The main benefit of exercise is not weight loss. It might be surprising to you, but the amount of exercise you need to do in order to lose weight is staggeringly low compared what you might think.
  • The biggest thing holding you back from exercising on a regular basis.
  • The most important thing you're not doing enough of at the gym.
  • What is periodization (nothing to do with hockey), why you care and why you have to have it in your training program.
  • Why it's important to understand that fitness is not something that just happens in the gym, it's something you do every day.

It's important that you spot a bad idea as soon as possible.

Ideas (linked together they are called a philosophy) form the basis of your life. It is only your ideas that can drive your actions.

If you're not getting what you want in life, you should first and foremost look at the ideas that you hold.

Today we examine an article on the Forks Over Knives website from a doctor who has spent "hundreds, if not thousands of hours, over the past several years understanding human biology, evolutionary medicine, and anthropology" to tell us why the paleo diet is bunk.

We're sure he is honest in his assessment and work ethic - however, millions of hours of work done under an incorrect idea - still leads to the same dead-end - error.

The purpose of this podcast is to discuss the evidence presented in the Forks Over Knives Article and point out the errors in reasoning.

What we covered:
  • It's important to remember that evolution is a linear process and it doesn't end. The amount of time humans ate meat doesn't matter, all that matters is that we have changed to eat meat. In another 40,000 years maybe we will be adapted to grains, we just aren't right now.
  • The time spent eating a certain food substance matters very little.
  • We're not sure who's saying that 'humans evolved to eat meat' as evolution occurs because of the environment - it doesn't cause the environment. Whether early homo sapiens were forced to eat meat or chose to eat meat doesn't matter. What matters is they did and because of that choice it changed (not forever but for now) our genetic expression.
  • Saying that chimpanzees share 99% of their DNA with a human is a throwaway statement. It oversimplifies the context of genetics and completely disregards epigenetics. It should not be used as proof of anything.
  • We love eating plants and vegetables, and we recommend eating a ton of them. However, eating plants still does not absolve your body from ALL genetic requirements.
