Of course it is! Everything that any human interacts with in their environment alters their brain. Please don't just believe this headline because the obvious situation that's assumed here is that by 'altering' they mean in a negative way. On today's podcast, we examine a study on how screen affects the brains of children and attempt to discern if this is something parents should be concerned about. The study looked at 11,000, 9-10-year-olds throughout the United States and found that:
The article also mentioned the traditional concerns around screen time such as increased risk of obesity, increased risk of depression, how social media affects the brain, and sleep alteration. The purpose of this podcast is to discuss these results and create context around what we believe you can realistically do about screen time with your child. What We Covered

There are many misleading health articles, plenty of half-truths and an abundance of incorrect information. On today's podcast we focus on the concept of becoming 'toned.' Our definition of the word toned means - not just losing weight but maintaining or increasing your lean body mass in way that leads to visible muscle on your body. So how do you do it? Well, if you paid attention to most articles on the internet you would just have to perform these 8-10 different exercises every day, and in just a few short weeks you'd be toned. Can this advice work? Of course, if you've already done most of the hardest and longest work, changing exercises or adding different exercise comprised of different reps, tempos, and weight will help, but that's not the whole story. The purpose of this episode is to give you a better and clearer understanding of what getting toned means and how to go about doing it. What we covered

This is the last car (life) you're ever going to get... It's what you do now, today, that determines how your mind and body will operate ten, twenty, and thirty years from now. -Warren Buffett Buffett is an excellent example of learning and then applying what you've learned to catapult success. If you had asked him 20 years ago, he would have said that he didn't understand tech stocks and would not invest. Two years ago, much to the investing world's surprise, Berkshire Hathaway (Buffett's holding company) made a sizeable purchase of Apple (a tech company) after which time Apple became the first company in history worth 1 trillion (yes with a T) dollars. Seems like just because Buffett didn't 'know' about tech companies doesn't mean he was open to learning and using that to his advantage in the future. So why do you care about this? You care about this because it's the same way your life can become better. 2018 is almost over and the holidays are always a time for reflection... so what the heck did you learn? More importantly and less often thought about is, how you can leverage what happened to you in order to make better and smarter choices in the future? Decisions that, like Buffett, will lead to greater success. The purpose of this podcast is to discuss our 2018, what we learned and most importantly, how we are going to turn those lessons into different actions for 2019 and beyond. No this won't guarantee our success, but eventually, if you try enough different stuff and learn enough, success will follow. What we covered:

In a recent study that was published by The New England Journal Of Medicine, probiotics given to children with gastroenteritis (commonly called the stomach flu) had no effect in helping treat the stomach flu. Nine hundred seventy-one children were selected between the ages of 3 months to 4 years to participate in a randomized controlled double-blind study to measure whether probiotics had a positive effect on the treatment of the stomach flu. The conclusion reached by the medical team was the group treated with the probiotic showed no improvement over the placebo group, therefore, probiotics are not effective in treating the stomach flu. The purpose of this podcast is to review the study but more importantly to apply the conclusion to the philosophical difference between disease treatment (the practice of medicine) and health creation - what we are encouraging with The Life By Design blueprint. We do not doubt the study's results - although we are sure there could have been better measures taken by the doctors to ensure specificity (a bacterial culture was not performed) and repeatability. In a study published in the New England Journal Of Medicine, scientists and researchers were attempting to help kids with peanut allergies survive in a (for lack of better terms) peanut infested world. The clinical goal of the research was to systematically expose the treatment group to small amounts of controlled peanut protein every day for 6 months and then a maintenance dose of peanut protein everyday for another 6 months in an effort to get the children to be able to consume a small amount of peanut protein with no ill effect. In essence, the study is aimed at increasing the adaptability of the human body. Why should you care about this? You care because adaptability, or at least that principle, is the very essence of health. If your body has a strong immune system - and one of the ways an immune system stays strong is it's exposed to a manageable level of bacteria and viruses - it gets stronger. If you systematically expose yourself to heavier weights at the gym you get physically stronger. If you expose yourself to mental stress, you get mentally tougher, etc. The purpose of the podcast is to help reinforce the idea that adaptability and improving it should be central to what you seek to do if you want to get the best out of your body. Stand up straight and don't slouch. Part of being a kid is having our parents tell us to stand up tall about a million and a half times. I'm sure our parents just wanted us to look good and not look like a lazy slouch... but who would have known just how accurate their advice was with regards to maximizing the health of our bodies. Yes, it's true, many people the fear the 'ugliness' and sloppiness' that poor posture brings - nobody wants to have a massive hump at the base of their neck when they are older - but poor posture affects ALL aspects of your health and physiology - not just the physical ones. It's called a mindset because you get to choose how you want to 'set' your 'mind.' For us at Life By Design this idea was an instant game changer. It means that you get to dictate the pace of your life, it means that you get to be in control. To be totally clear, and to play devil's advocate for that last statement, it is true, nobody completely controls their lives. We interact with people whom we can't control, the outside world is mostly unpredictable, and crap hit's the fan for all of us. So how can you be in control? You are in control because you get to choose how you respond to the situations you are dealt. Mentally tough people respond differently. Charles Darrow, who lost everything during the 1929 stock market crash leading into the great depression, did not succumb to the malaise and fear of being without money, he created a game about losing money, and how to make more called Monopoly, I'm sure you've heard of it. I'm also sure you know that Monopoly still to this day, sells about 20,000 units per year. It is always nice, and not surprising when you read research that supports the idea that improving health makes everything, in this case pregnancy and birth, more comfortable and better for the person who's health increased. In a study published from the University of Alberta - 150 minutes a week of moderate exercise can result in a 40 percent reduction in the risk of developing gestational diabetes, gestational hypertension and pre-eclampsia researchers discovered. There was an interesting note that Margie Davenport, a cardiovascular researcher at the University of Alberta made, that pregnant women have been understudied in the past. The purpose of this podcast is to discuss this research, what it means for pregnant women, and most importantly how to take and apply this research into tangible steps for you to be able to do something with it. Autoimmune disease can be devastating. Autoimmune diseases are challenging to diagnose (at best), can take various shapes and forms (hence the wide variety of diagnosed autoimmune disorders), can affect different organs and systems in the same person, and to top it all off, can act very differently in each person they affect. The management of autoimmune diseases has been equally frustrating. Some patients respond well to traditional medical approaches; others do not. Treatment can also be time sensitive meaning what 'worked' before does not 'work' now; with no rhyme or reason as to why. Sometimes symptoms can lie dormant for years and then, seemingly out of nowhere, the patient has a massive flare up. But one thing that seems to consistently help everyone with an autoimmune disease is to modify their diet. This is not to suggest that changing your diet is a cure or even a treatment for autoimmune diseases, but it has been shown to help, even tremendously in some people. The purpose of this podcast is to discuss our recommended protocol for Autoimmune Diseases and why we believe you should give it a try if you have an autoimmune disease and for some, if you just want to test your body out. At Life By Design we are big fans of knowledge. As human beings, we depend on our minds and the mind's development not only to survive but to help us (humans) solve the problems that plague us every day. Education should be paramount to both the learning and application of knowledge. Unfortunately, in some circumstances, it's not. We believe that the youth of society, those that are going to carry the torch of humanity's future are not being equipped with the tools necessary to develop their brains fully and completely. The purpose of this podcast is to share the requirements for education based on what we would like to see, and what we believe you, as a parent can do at home with your children to ensure that they are gaining and applying knowledge. This podcast is not meant to be a political or a social attack on education. We want to share solutions and tips that we've found helpful for us as parents who know the importance of what a good education can provide to their kids. We would like to see more children educated properly so they can handle the responsibilities and challenges of life with confidence, ease, and grace. What We Covered:

Well, we're in October, and you know what that means? It means that we've been at it for a month now and I know you've started to feel the effects of being 'back to the grind.' Most people I've chatted with are on their 2nd cold, University students are starting mid-terms, the air is getting colder, the darkness is getting longer, we're seeing fewer people outside, there's talk of Christmas and the level of business and craziness is high. Time for a break right? I totally agree with you, in fact, this past week I've had to dial it back a bit myself. I was tired, fighting a low-grade sore throat, dragging when the alarm would go off in the morning and was feeling beat-up, not energized and exhausted after my workouts. Since getting full on sick, or worse, physically injured (which, no matter what you do is always a possibility) is not an option... I knew I had to do something. The purpose of this podcast is to discuss the importance of rest. Why you need to have it on a regular basis, but more importantly how it actually affects you and why it needs to be more structured than you might think. Rest is often equated with doing nothing, but at Life By Design we don't look at rest like a complete disconnect from all reality. Let me explain. What I Covered

Is fat bad for you? And is there such a thing as good fat and bad fat? The answer is yes and yes although not for the reasons that you might suspect. Humans are not new to eating food. This is not meant to be an inflammatory statement, simply a reminder that we've been eating the same things for generations, like 40,000 years. We've hunted, we gathered and we survived and thrived. This also means that we've adapted to certain things (fats from real foods), while not knowing what to do with others (fats from artificially created foods). Fat is one of those things that we've adapted to very well over time. Some researchers and anthropologists argue that fat has been such a vital part of our nutrient base that it has made us who we are as humans. They how can it be bad? Just because fat is a requirement for your life and optimum health doesn't mean that you get to eat it carte blanche. It also doesn't mean that you can avoid the source of it without any consequences or that you can have other bad habits because you're eating fat and that's 'good for you.' The purpose of this podcast is to take a closer look at fat. What We Covered

In an interesting article written by Art Eggleton of The Huffington Post, he claims that to solve the health care crisis in Canada (and other countries) we need a stronger public health sector. There are a variety of opinions on whether we have a 'health care crisis' in Canada or not. If you were to ask anyone that is not Canadian they would tell you that health care in Canada is 'free' and glorious. However, some Canadians have a much different opinion of our current system. The article sights that in 2015, 37% of the entire tax budget was spent on health care costs and that that number would be increasing, despite provinces best efforts to keep costs down while providing a high standard of care. The solution? Decrease the burden of disease. How could we do that? According to the article, increase the funding to the public health sector towards areas with a sole focus on lifestyle and the prevention of disease. The article mentions that public health only receives 3-4% of all tax dollars, which is incredibly low compared to other sectors. Will this solution work, and is it the best option? Since this is not a political podcast and we are not politicians...we don't know. We do however know that waiting for the government to come and save you (or anyone for that matter) is not the best idea. You need to take your health into your own hands. The purpose of this podcast is to help give you some ideas of how and why you should be responsible for your own health. What I covered

"If each of us would only sweep our own doorstep, the whole world would be clean." Mother Teresa I love this quote because it's true, it also applies to this week's podcast. The concept of Rational Selfishness, yes selfish, is strongly endorsed by Life By Design. We believe that if everyone practiced it, and allowed others the freedom to practice it, or not, the world would, in fact, be a much better place. If you're new to the Life By Design podcast, this should be an interesting episode for you, and if you've listened in the past please take the time to review. What's wrong with putting yourself first? Why is other's happiness OK, but yours wrong? Does selfishness mean harming other people? Does one person have to lose for another to win? These are questions and morals that we've grown up with, but are they really true? Are they even helpful, or could they be harmful? The purpose of this podcast is to explain the idea of rational selfishness and how, if accepted, rational selfishness can lead you to a life of happiness and joy, without hurting or harming others. Weight loss is a very interesting and confusing topic. It's interesting because, despite the plethora of studies and real life (and social media) testimonials, some people still believe the things that they learned growing up, despite that information being thoroughly refuted. For example, many people still believe that eating many meals throughout the day is the only way to lose weight. "I'm just not hungry in the morning," they say. There is nothing wrong with eating all of your meals at the end of the day, the problem is not timing, the problem is that by the end of the day most people are so hungry that they eat whatever is placed in front of them and that happens to be high processed carbohydrate, high sugar food, which, if consumed in high quantity, will create a state in which your body puts on weight. On today's podcast, we talk about protein. Do you want to live a life worth living or are OK with keeping things the way they are? The fact that you're even reading this and listening to the podcast means we already know your answer...you want an extraordinary life. That decision alone puts you in the top 5% of people living on the planet, which is sad when you really think about it. That sole fact that you want better your life, means that along the way you are going to pick up many nasty comments, deep exhales, raised eyebrows, pleas to stop and other, sometimes very hurtful and nasty, criticism. The one unfortunate quality of social media is that it has opened you up to every 'keyboard cowboy' in the known universe. It's funny how they all want to tell you how ugly, stupid and ridiculous you are for even thinking that you can (or should) somehow expect better for yourself, while they type their insults behind the closed and safe doors of their room without attempting to better themselves. The most challenging and sad part about facing criticism is not when it comes from partyman6969 on YouTube, it's when it comes from your mom or your sister who claim to have 'your best interest' at heart. It's important for you to understand that you will face criticism, that's a guarantee, it's how you overcome it, or not, that will propel you forward or keep you back. Growing up there was always a debate as to which should be done first, weights or cardio? Of course, every side had its pundits. You should always do cardio first because that will make you more cut, always do weights first because that will help you develop more mass, never do cardio, never lift heavy...I'm sure you've heard it all. The answer to the question is one of either two things: It doesn't matter which comes first or it depends on what you want to do. In the example from the paragraph above, the standard was always weight loss and body composition. In that regards, the answer, in case you were wondering, is that it doesn't matter since weight loss and getting 'ripped' is more about diet than exercise anyway. Now when it comes to learning a new skill, the answer could be much different. A research team from McGill University discovered that a getting as little as 15 minutes of exercise after trying to learn a new motor skill has increased the retention of the learning of that skill. So what does this mean? Maybe nothing just yet, but it could have vast implications to rehab, and your ability to learn new skills. It means that if you're learning a new skill in your gym like squatting, mobility movements, snatch, clean, muscle up, etc. you should stick around and do at least 15 of activity after you've practiced. It's also related to chiropractic in a sense because 'priming' the nerve system is involved. What We Covered

Which diet is the best one? Should you be a vegetarian or a vegan? What about paleo, is that right for you? I'm sure you've heard you could lose a ton of weight doing 'keto,' or maybe Atkins is better? Is meat OK to eat or does it cause cancer? What about fasting, should you do three days fasts or just a little every day? What if you only want to lose weight? I heard there's a new supplement from the rain forest that's helping people lose 10 pounds in 5 days without having to change their diet. Yes nutrition is very confusing but I don't believe it has to be. I think it can be made to be simple. Simple, however, is not easy. Simple means easy to understand. Let's suppose that you could create a time machine and that you could travel back in time 20 years and visit yourself. What would you say? Other than the obvious, play these lottery numbers, don't visit this part of the world at this time, bet on this team to win the Super Bowl, what would you say? Knowing what you would say to your 20 years younger self is a valuable exercise, but paradoxically enough, it's not useful to you now, it's relevant for your future self. Aren't you stunned at how young you feel now? If someone were to tell you 20 years ago that you would feel as young as you do that day at 40, or 65, or 80, would you believe them? If you remember back to when you were a kid, 40 wasn't just old, it was finished, you were done. Now, at 40 you realize that you still feel 20, and have a whole life in front of you. The purpose of this podcast is to help you understand two things: that the same things you would have told yourself 20 years ago apply now more than ever and that regret is the worst human emotion. There was a great article posted from our friends over at T-nation titled "Do these exercises forever." The purpose of the article, which has been linked below for your reading pleasure, was to give you 5 exercises that you absolutely must do if you want to continue using your body into your old age. The exercises were chosen based on the most common day to day stresses that you would likely experience. We love and agree entirely with these exercises, however there is one crucial thing missing from the article - the motivation. Or, in Life By Design terms, the why behind the what. If you're not motivated to do something, it will never get done. We see more obesity and inactivity than ever before, yet we know more about nutrition and exercise science than we ever have. You've never had more access to free knowledge and free information regarding what to eat and how to train, still, more and more people are finding it harder and harder to keep their health on track. Price is what you pay; value is what you get. -Warren Buffet What would your life look like if you started thinking about value over cost? What if the conversation was more focused on the worth of something vs. how much you had to pay? You are an investor. I'm not sure if anyone has ever told you that, but it is entirely true. Of course, like a million other ideas and concepts, investing (at least to most) has been linked to money. When you hear investing you think of putting your money somewhere and over time you either get more of it or you lose it. This is true, it is one kind of investing but let's not forget that money is only one kind of value, there are others too. The best part about value is you get to decide what's valuable to you, and what's not as useful. This is why, going full circle, you are an investor. Today we are examining a study from Frontiers in Neuroscience. I'm not sure if it's genuine or just good old dramatic copy writing but the study has been labeled as 'ground-breaking' by the researchers and press, but it just seems like common sense to us. The study involved studying 2 separate groups of mice. One group was allowed to live life normally while the other group was reduced to living with the restricted use of their hind legs. They observed both groups of mice for 28 days. After the 28 days they found that the mice who did not use their hind legs had 70% less neural stem cells compared to the normal group, oligodendrocytes also did not reach maturity in the 'no hind legs group'. as well, the no hind legs group noticed a decrease in blood oxygen and negative impact on CDK5Rap1 which is a gene associated with mitochondrial health. The researchers are hoping to apply this research to neurology diseases like Multiple Sclerosis and Spinal Muscular Atrophy to help strengthen exercise protocols for all diseases. The purpose of this podcast is to discuss the study further, it's implications and to help solidify the rational to continue promoting exercise and movement for not just for sick people, but for all people. If you've ever been to an Eat By Design seminar you'll know that one of the principles is to stop counting calories. That's not to say that calories don't matter as they very much do, however, they are not the most important thing to focus on when you are trying to change your diet and improve your health. The quality (freshness & realness vs. how processed) of your food is far more critical to your health than the amount of it that you eat. Today we focus on the other side of the picture, specifically the value of "macro counting". How the amount of protein, fat and carbohydrate that you ingest has everything to do with weight loss, body fat percentage and some health factors like energy and sleep. We will also give you some basic recommendations on how you can learn more about how to count your macros if you're interested and which apps we use when we are tracking ours. I agree...thinking that you're owed something, just because you're here is a destructive way (and exactly the opposite of what I'm advocating) to live. I'm well aware that a lot of horrible things happen to good people every day. Violence, abuse, disease, loss, harm, all of it. I know that not everyone did something to make those things happen to themselves. I know people are unlucky and things happen. However, I stand true to my statement. It's still beneficial to act like it's your fault. The reason I'm standing true is if it's your fault it went wrong, it's your fault if it went right. You maintain the power, the control and the autonomy - not someone else. The purpose of this podcast is for me to share 2 pivotal moments in my life where I made the realization and conclusion that I wasn't acting responsibly and how 'blaming myself' for the outcome has made all the difference helping me become happy and more successful. "Work hard", hustle & grind", "always be closing" are just some of the slang words associated with success in our culture. Of course, it's impossible to have any type of success without hours and hours of hard work. Stress vs. rest might be the one time where the concept of balance is an excellent way to understand the delicate relationship between the two. Balance is unique in helping you learn what you need to do to obtain your values. The purpose of this podcast is to help you understand the reasons for time off and downtime. It is not always (nor should it be) an extended period of time doing harmful activities to your body, it should time away from your central goals and principal value in life for the specific intent of getting closer to reaching those goals. It's a very normal emotion to want to help your child when they have a raging fever, are feel poorly and want nothing more than for you to hold them. The chances are most will try to bring the temperature down – either with medicine or other measures, such as warm baths. On today's episode of Life By Design we explore the question... Is fever reduction a good thing or could it actually be bad? What we covered:

Great news from Clinical Oncology Society of Australia in regards to recommendations for cancer patients. "Exercise should be prescribed to all cancer patients, and not to do so would be harmful." This is not a new thought, yet it is very exciting to finally hear it stated in a such a clear, concise way. Hopefully, this pro-exercise attitude will continue throughout the medical profession, and patient's health will start to increase. Of course, claiming that ALL cancer patients need exercise and then having a strategy that actually works are tow totally different things. It's hard enough for healthy human beings to make exercise a regular staple in their life - let alone a cancer patient who is actively undergoing both chemotherapy and radiation therapy...both of which are known to almost completely zap the patient of their energy and drive. It almost seems like a romantic notion to say "you should do this" but then have little practical advice on how to actually do that. The purpose of this podcast is to help people with cancer, and those caring for them, learn how to add exercise to their life. What we cover:

Coffee is still a topic of huge debate with Life By Design. Not mentioning any names, but some of us believe coffee should be included in the same category as dairy. This means if you're adapted, go for it, if not, stay away. You might wonder "what does this have to do with coffee and fasting" and the answer is everything. The argument hinges on how coffee is digested and metabolized. Understanding digestion is the cornerstone for understanding fasting and its benefits. The benefits of intermittent fasting are: 1) Your body is in a state of ketosis 2) Fat burning 3) Insulin sensitivity 4) Autophagy - your body killing off unwanted or diseased cells 5) AMPK - an enzyme that inhibits your body from storing fat. It's not that fasting causes your body to do those things, your body would do them anyway, it's just that your metabolism is a massive energy user. When your body is engaged in processing and breaking down food, other aspects of your physiology don't receive the same attention. A similar example is not having an appetite when you're not feeling well. Increased immune system activity is a huge energy cost for your body, so much that suppressing metabolism is necessary to optimize the efficiency of your body's immune system. The purpose of this podcast is to discuss coffee and how it relates to intermittent fasting. What we cover:

Questions like these are always amusing. They're amusing because of the way that it's framed and answered. To be clear, we don't talk about 'exercise' for children because it sounds like an intervention. Using that language makes it sound like we are trying to treat and prevent a problem for kids, which is why this CNN article is so very interesting. All of the CDC, NHS, and other government organizations recommendations for exercise stem from research on how much is required to reduce or prevent a disease or condition from happening, not how much is required to create an extraordinary child. It's like asking "How much money should I save to not go bankrupt" vs. "What do I need to do to be wealthy?" Our goal is to help create extraordinary kids with exceptional levels of health - not just avoiding disease and illness. The purpose of this podcast is to answer 2 questions: How much exercise do kids need to be their absolute best and how you can make that happen for them. What we cover:

This week we're proud and excited to have back Jadzia Truszkowski. Last year, at almost this exact time, Jadzia and I spent some time talking about her latest achievement - qualifying for her first CrossFit regionals. This year she's back, and it's been quite an improvement. Jadzia is ranked 25th in the entire world after the open and 3rd in the Canada East Region. Most importantly, and she mentions this during the interview, she feels like she belongs with the top dogs now. She no longer feels like she's on "their" floor, but that she has a shot to compete at the highest level. The purpose of this podcast is to get an update on what Jadzia is up to but also to learn and understand what it takes to be the best at what you do. The principles of mastery are universal and it will be powerful for you to hear Jadiza's perspective on it. What we cover:

What the heck is emotional intelligence? It's funny, although you might not know the exact definition, you already have an idea of what we're talking about. The term originated from Yale University in the early 90's and is defined as being smart about your feelings. It's how to use your emotions to inform your thinking and use your thinking to inform your emotions. We don't necessarily like the definition, but love the concept of having emotional intelligence. Intelligence is defined as the ability to deal with a broad range of abstractions. Emotional intelligence therefore would mean the ability to emotionally handle a broad range of situations in a way that is beneficial to your life. Unfortunately, this is not the cultural atmosphere of today. We have slogans like "I don't want to adult" and we thrive on the nostalgia of when we were little and had no 'worries or responsibilities.' It's these types of ideas that have slowed the development of our emotional intelligence and have contributed to the age of anxiety, depression, and poor mental health. The purpose of this podcast is to discuss the concept of emotional intelligence and how you can develop it. What we cover:

Stick around for one second because this is going somewhere... Take a quick moment and open up YouTube...type in "rocks and sand Stephan Covey" and watch the first video that pops up. What you hopefully take away from this video is that trying to fit in the little things around your current busy life will not work; you must first schedule and complete the large projects if you ever hope to get the little things done. How does this apply to your fitness? Your body works on the exact same principles that Stephan Covey has outlined. To be fit, healthy, have a great physique and get everything you want out of the gym, there is a certain order that must be performed. The article, which you can find in the show notes, is a great example of a high school strength and conditioning coach that was losing his mind. ALL of his athletes that spend more time on skill work (small thing) over developing strength (big thing) spend more time injured, hurt and as time goes on get surpassed by athletes who are doing things the right way. To you, this means that you can't fake the correct order and fundamental building blocks of exercise, especially if you're going to be doing for a while. The purpose of this podcast is to help you understand the order in which you should be progressing at the gym and what your next step should be. What we cover:

Fasting has been around for centuries and continues to fall in and out of fashion. It was not uncommon in university for peers to attempt to drink nothing but water, lemon juice and cayenne pepper for days at a time to either lose weight or "flush toxins". Of course why people choose to fast could be its own unique topic, but the reasons vary from losing weight to helping recover from a disease. Of course, like all things, there are fasts, and then there are fasts. But is there any truth or relevancy to fasting or it is just something that crazy 'hippie' health-o-chondriacs do? The purpose of this podcast is to help give you a clear understanding of not only the different kinds and types of fasts but their purpose and benefits (if any). What we cover:

Slowly and surely (although it always feels like it's taking far too much time) spring is coming and right behind it will be summer! Summer means, heat, swimming and spending a lot our time outside. It also means things like showing more skin, more time at the beach, lounging by the pool and exposing more of your body to other people...which can be stressful. The fact that terms like 'summer body' exist shows a certain level of concern or importance to having others look at, or at least notice, you. The fear, pressure or motivation (depending) on how you look at it, can cause people to do crazy things (eat certain ways, train certain ways, starve themselves, etc.) to meet the visual requirements they're trying hard to achieve. Let us help you. It is possible to lose a significant amount of weight without having to sacrifice your health, life or sanity? It's not easy, but it can be done and it can be simplified. The purpose of this podcast is not just creating a successful plan for this year, but getting it right the first time so you don't have to worry about the 'summer bod' conversation ever again. We know you know that exercise is good for you, that's no longer even debatable. Unfortunately, most health professionals downplay how powerful meeting the movement requirement is for your body. Exercise positively influences cancer, diabetes, heart disease, autoimmune disease, etc... basically every health condition is affected in a positive way. Yes, it's a panacea. Every possible function you can think of in your body improves when you've been exercising. Most people leave a lot of the benefits of exercise in the tank - meaning... they're not meeting all of the requirements for exercise and could be benefiting even more. The purpose of this podcast is to discuss where the biggest gaps are in your training and to give you suggestions and tips on how to fill them and get even better than you already are. What we cover:

It's important that you spot a bad idea as soon as possible. Ideas (linked together they are called a philosophy) form the basis of your life. It is only your ideas that can drive your actions. If you're not getting what you want in life, you should first and foremost look at the ideas that you hold. Today we examine an article on the Forks Over Knives website from a doctor who has spent "hundreds, if not thousands of hours, over the past several years understanding human biology, evolutionary medicine, and anthropology" to tell us why the paleo diet is bunk. We're sure he is honest in his assessment and work ethic - however, millions of hours of work done under an incorrect idea - still leads to the same dead-end - error. The purpose of this podcast is to discuss the evidence presented in the Forks Over Knives Article and point out the errors in reasoning. What we covered:

Despite CrossFit being an overwhelming success with more people joining the CrossFit community every single day, CrossFit still has it’s share of haters and people who try their best to discredit it. It's important to note, that CrossFit is not the first or only model of training with the same general set of these principles. CrossFit encompasses most of the same principles you would find in the majority of strength and conditioning facilities. ‘Overtraining’ is one of those concepts used to create uncertainty and even fear. Of course overtraining is real and it exists… but does every crossfitter engage in overtraining? Does everyone lifting weights and training with intensity experience overtraining? What we covered:

Do you want to be the healthiest you possibly can be? What about the rest of your family? Would you like your children to live a long healthy life? What about your parents...do you want them to be around for another 20-30 years? Let us let you in a little (not really) secret to the one key ingredients that the healthiest (it actually applies to ALL levels of success) have that no one else does: Responsibility. The health challenges that faced Canada in 2017 will only get worse in 2018. Suicide rates, opioid deaths, cancer, heart disease, ALL increased in 2017 (opioid deaths rose by a staggering 70%) and are all on schedule to keep climbing in 2018. What can we do about this? We are tired of the answer to this question being something to the tune of "more support, more awareness, more intervention, more funds, more testing, etc." The answer is... and this is not going to be easy to read or hear for some...more responsibility. It's tragic that people are suffering, it's heartbreaking that help doesn't exist for those who need it, however, more of what isn't working only makes things worse. If the most successful people on the planet are the most responsible, then the lesson for you is practice responsibility. The purpose of this podcast is to discuss the challenges, and virtues of practicing one of the 6-pillars of self-esteem, Personal Responsibility. What we cover:

January 31st was Bell Canada's #bellletstalk day. The purpose of the day is to talk about something that ALL of us are far too familiar with... mental health, and more specifically 'mental' disease. Do yourself a favor and search the hashtag #bellletstalk and read all the amazing stories of bravery, courage, and survival in the face of the most horrifying of opponents, your abyss. As comforting as it is to read the heroic efforts of individuals who continue to survive against increasing odds there is one thing we think is unacceptable and is rarely seen on #bellletstalk day - solutions. It is true that awareness is the first step to solving a problem. However, there is a massive gap between knowing about the problem of mental health and solving that problem. We want to help solve the problem. The purpose of this podcast is to discuss mental health and help give tips and practical strategies to help improve yours no matter your starting point. On Today's Show, we welcome our guest: Kate Kordsmeier. Kate was a writer (she still writes, just no more freelancing) in the food and travel space. It sounds amazing and parts of it were, but having to go out to eat at restaurants, and eat all that tasty yet unhealthy food, 3-4 nights a week will take its toll on your health. Her health was suffering. She was diagnosed with PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome), leaky gut, and thyroid issues. Worse, she felt unheard and not carried for by her medical team. Kate decided that it was up to her to take her health into her own hands, so she stopped all medical treatment and found help elsewhere. After trying an anti-inflammatory diet for one week, her health dramatically improved. She was so excited about her results that she decided to tell everyone and channel her energy into starting a blog, writing a book, and coaching other people to health. Listen in to this episode to learn how Kate did it (and how you can do it too!) What we covered:

*** As it turns out, the video upon which this episode is based was a hoax but the concept of sports without implements is not. The principles discussed on this episode remain relevant, important and valuable *** 'Double take' does not sum up our reaction when reading the article that prompted this week's episode. There was a Facebook video posted on the CBC Facebook page about a Washington State Youth Sports Organization that has stopped using the ball while playing soccer. Yes, you read that correctly, they are still getting together on a soccer field (apparently we can't remove that), wearing cleats and soccer outfits, but are playing with an imaginary ball. The purpose of this is to remove the 'pressures' of competition, stop proclaiming winners and losers and therefore protect the child's self-esteem. This is not the first time a story like this hit the news. In 2013 The Soccer Association Of Midlake Ontario did similar claiming "We want our children to grow up learning that sport is not about competition, rather it's about using your imagination. If you imagine you're good at soccer, then you are." The purpose of this podcast is to discuss why ideas like this are harmful, should be avoided and that by implementing them, they are in fact crushing your child's self-esteem. What we cover:

Health Canada is warning that this year's flu could be the worst in years. The CBC said that both Canada and US are both being strongly affected, even more so than last year. So what can you do about it? The purpose of this podcast is to discuss how your immune system works and what you can do to ensure that you do everything you can to not get the flu this year or ever! Wouldn't it be nice if you could finally set aside all the fear and concern about sickness and illness? That's not to say that you'll never get sick, but I think Jim Rohn gave us the secret to fighting colds and the flu when he said... "Don't wish it were easier, wish you were better." Revised in this context it would be "... wish your immune system was stronger." What we covered:

We can't believe it, but 2018 is already here. One of the books and people we've been obsessed with lately is Ray Dalio and his book entitled "Principles." If you don't know who Ray Dalio is: he founded Bridgewater, a financial institution that manages the world's largest hedge fund, he has worked with governments and economic policy makers on all levels and he has pioneered new ways to manage and grow financial portfolios. In fact, if you have any money under current financial management, it's safe to say that the techniques Ray Dalio developed are being used to grow your money. So why do you care? In his latest book Ray writes exclusively of the power of principles and principled thinking in helping live what seems to be a charmed live. One quote that we've been thinking about and discussing a lot lately is his simple equation in the title: Failure + Reflection = Progress We're fascinated with how successful people handle failure, or their perception of failure. Unlike most of us, they are not embarrassed when they fail, in fact, they expect it, especially when trying out new ideas...some of them even enjoy it because they know it's part of progress. If you're not embarrassed by your 'failures' you enjoy spending time reflecting on what they taught you and how you can improve the next time you try. This where progress happens. Ray also writes about how successful people learn from others failures and apply the lessons to their own lives. The purpose of this podcast is to discuss the lessons that 2017 has taught us and how our thoughts/failures/takeaways can be leveraged by you, to improve your life. What we covered:
