Life By Design Podcast
Oct 18, 2017, will always be remembered by Canadians.

That was the day that Gord Downie, leader of The Tragically Hip and Canadian Icon passed away.

The Tragically Hip have been called a Canadian treasure, the national band of Canada and many other flattering things have been said about them.

Gord Downie was (and will continue to be) a role model and an influence. He inspired many in Canada, his vision reached much wider than music, and he had a lot to say.

Role models are a real and powerful force in your life. If you have good ones you can overcome the worst that life can throw at you and still be successful. If, on the other hand, you (either consciously or unconsciously) have selected poor role models your life might never reach it' s full potential.

The purpose of this episode it to help you understand why having and worshiping heroes is a key to success; and how to choose a proper role model.

What we cover:
  • Issac Newton said, "The reason I can see so far is that I've stood on the shoulders of giants." Role models are an excellent shortcut to help you become the person you want to be in order to achieve the things you want to achieve.
  • Choose your role models carefully and you can even be selective in that process. It's OK to look up to and admire someone, that's human nature, but you don't have to accept all of them. You can pick and choose which parts you like and which parts you don't like. Tiger Woods would have been an excellent golf role model; not so much in the relationship department.
  • Role models are art in motion. As a human being you need art to survive. Your role model - in a very real example - embodies that. Be very careful who you choose.

It's not every day that we're shocked by what we read... but today we certainly were...

Every week, while preparing for the Life By Design Podcast, we do a lot of additional reading and researching.

We try to pick things that are current, exciting, and most importantly, beneficial to you.

This week we were floored by the article 7 Things That Happen When You Stop Eating Meat.

Here is what we were told:

  1. Meat causes diabetes.
  2. Whole grains reduce your chances of diabetes.
  3. If you stop eating meat, you will get the right amount and the right type of protein.

 Some pretty bold statements...

What we covered:

  • A step by step review of this article, covering all seven reasons, including our analysis of the good, bad and the ugly.
  • Why you need to beware of ALL nutritional research.
  • Why knowing basic human physiology is vital to understanding when someone is trying to pull-one over on you.

Often talked about but seldom understood is the emotion of positivity.

It's an emotion that everyone wants. Who can blame you for wanting to feel hopeful, inspired and motivated (all synonyms for when you think of positivity)?

However, the reason our pursuit of positivity falls flat, to be brutally honest, is because we are going about it the wrong way.

We have sayings like "fake it 'til you make it" that trick us into thinking there are shortcuts to the emotions we want to feel.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

The purpose of this podcast is to give you a realistic and true definition of what being a positive person is like and help give you some practical steps on how to achieve positivity.

What we covered:
  • What Life By Design means by the phrase 'staying positive.' Positivity is an outlook towards your future, it's not a spur of the moment forced emotion that you attempt to make yourself feel no matter what the circumstances. Life is challenging, especially if you decide to pursue your values. One of the great challenges of life is what happens when one of those values (your wife, family, career) die or become impossible to attain? It would be crazy to feel 'positive' about that situation. But you can remain a positive person.
  • How becoming positive is a choice that you get to make. Remember emotions are results of actions; not the cause of actions. Meaning the genuine feeling of positivity is caused by the actions you take. When you take actions that will create a better future for you, will help you meet a goal, or pursue a value - it's natural to feel positive, but you can't 'fake it 'til you make it.'
  • Practical and tangible steps on how you can increase the positivity in your life and become a happier person.

Many lives have been ruined by alcohol consumption.

No, not alcoholism… but the long term effects of drinking alcohol.

Things like diabetes, cancer, heart disease, weight gain and hormone problems are all potential negative side effects.

So when a study claims that exercise can cancel the negative effects of alcohol, we perk right up and take notice.

Is the information legit? Listen to this episode to find out.

What We Covered:

  • The basic physiology that explains why alcohol is bad for you.
  • The basic physiology of exercise.
  • Exercise standards.
  • If you can actually 'negate' your alcohol consumption by exercising.

The article points out (some of) the benefits and positive health effects of eating coconut oil yet, the conclusion remains "don't eat it, it's bad for you."

Huh?!?

Not quite sure we understand exactly what's at play, but you're probably as confused as we are...

Make no mistake about it; most fats are good for you including saturated fats. The research and data build a stronger and stronger case every with each new study. Yes, there are some, despite the openly clear evidence, that do not want to see what's right in front of their noses.

The purpose of this podcast is to try to untangle this horrible mess of an article while getting you to see the big picture of why fat (particularity saturated fat) should be a staple of your diet.

What we cover:
  • The most important concept Life By Design has developed and supported is the principle of requirements and strategies and it is the secret to solving this confusing and contradictory article.
  • Why fat, especially saturated fat, is an absolute must for your body.
  • Why you shouldn't listen to large government-funded agencies for any advice, let alone health care advice.
  • Our thoughts on why we think coconut oil and saturated fat are consistently being dumped on by popular media.
  • Our best attempt at trying to solve the non-sequitur conclusion of 'don't eat coconut oil' despite the authors admitting to some of the benefits of coconut and MCT oil.
