Life By Design Podcast
It's hard to believe but this episode 200! Thank you to everyone who has listened from the beginning and to all our new listeners as well.

Today we're talking about a very difficult situation for parents.

Nothing stings as much as the snide remarks of another parent (or family member) when they are speaking about your developmentally delayed child.

"What's wrong with him?"

"Why isn't she taking yet?"

"Shouldn't he be walking by now?"

I understand that these comments are with good and innocent intent (most of the time), but that doesn't mean that they don't leave you feeling like you are a complete failure and bad parent.

This week a good friend of mine told me about a little girl who was about a year old and still couldn't lift her head up. The parents, 2 wonderful and extremely loving people, were beside themselves in despair, fear, and frustration.

They didn't know what to do to help their little girl.

I've learned, from experience, that most parents of children who are (or could be) delayed have no idea what they can do to help their suffering child.

Noticing and diagnosing the delay is not the problem; finding a solution that helps your child get better is.

Most parents are left frustrated and without knowing just how they can help.

Let's change that.

What we cover:
  • The huge difference between being delayed and developing at your child's own pace. Every child is different; thankfully developmental milestones are given a range, not a specific time.
  • The 5 categories of childhood development.
  • The 3 general causes of the developmental problem.
  • A 4th category that could be contributing to the developmental delay. This category is overlooked by nearly all medical providers and practitioners, yet it is the system that controls and coordinates all behaviour and learning. I realize it sounds obvious and strange at the same time.
  • 3 steps you can take to ensure the 4th category is addressed and not adding to the problem.

As we record, my wife Dr. Rachelle, is 5 days overdue. If you've ever listened to Life By Design, you know we don't like what that idea means as kids are born when they are ready.

It's not fun watching her move around in extreme pain (and only getting worse) while her body is slowly getting ready to deliver our 2nd child.

There is nothing fun about the back cramps, lack of sleep, shortness of breath, pain, swelling and lack of energy.

If you've ever given or been around birth, you know this already.

One thing you might not know is that the same hormones that cause you to hate life when you were getting ready to deliver are the very same ones that could ensure your baby has a healthy metabolism after they are born.

This is really important since every chronic disease that is killing us (cancer, diabetes, heart disease, autoimmune disorders) can be connected in some way to broken metabolism and it is in your best interest to help your child in any way you can.

The study found that stress hormones, produced only late in pregnancy and during labour, may also be responsible for helping your child metabolize fat, instead of sugar.

This is just one possible effect of interfering with a cascade of chemicals that are part of the normal birthing process.

What we cover:
  • The importance of fat metabolism and why you should care.
  • Don't rush it. Why natural deliveries (when possible) are better for both mom and baby. No, this is not a judgment on how you should have your child, but there are certain facts you should know.
  • Why natural is NOT (you read that right) always better. How can you tell if you should continue with a natural birth or have a more medically oriented one?

Your brain is the most important part of your body.

Every thought, emotion, pleasure, pain, accomplishment and more is experienced in your brain.

Your brain controls your ability to pick up your children, do your job, train, eat, sleep, rest, watch TV, fight off an infection and everything else in between.

Your brain runs everything from your lungs, metabolism, hormones, circulation, breathing and beyond.

Your brain helps you learn, houses your consciousness, your personality, your potential and your abilities.

Let's play it safe and say your brain is important. Heck, those functions are just scratching the surface of the incredible organ known as your brain.

But, I find something very interesting...

Smart people get insurance on everything that is valuable to them. They understand that you can't predict the future, but you can protect your assets to make sure you don't lose them.

Your brain is your biggest asset...what are you doing to protect it?

If you are like most people, the answer is nothing.

I know I'm not being entirely fair since you've probably never been taught to take care of your brain. Research is starting to change that.

One of the best ways to protect your brain is chiropractic care but it has always been a bit of an enigma to most of the population.

I'm sure you know people that swear by it, maybe you've even heard of some amazing and unbelievable stories of people with serious health problems going to a chiropractor and finding success and relief even after seeing multiple medical providers.

As it turns out, we are starting to realize how chiropractic has been able to perform all these miracles... as it turns out chiropractic change the way your brain works.

What we covered:
  • How chiropractic care literally changes your brain function and helps your body.
  • The difference between chiropractic approaches and who you are looking for.
  • Who this approach to chiropractic is best for.

As the year is starting to wind down, the internet is full of meme's proclaiming 2016 a disaster of a year.

My favorite is the following:

"Fidel Castro survived 857 attempted assassinations; he couldn't even survive 2016."

Very funny, but also very sad.

Of course, it's possible to have a year of hardship in which you experience loss, personal struggle, setbacks and even failure. However, I find it interesting that it's always the same people who experience the same failures, while the same people are getting more and more successful.

One huge reason why you are not finding the success you've been wishing for year after year is due to your lack of planning.

"Failing to prepare is preparing to fail."
-Benjamin Franklin

I know you've heard and maybe even said that exact phrase before. If you are an athlete of any kind and you had a nickel for every time your coach said it, you would be rich...well, maybe not rich but you get the point.

If you know this is true then why aren't you busy preparing for success?

This year I challenge you to take some time and plan to make 2017 the best year that you've ever had.

The biggest challenge you face?

You're unsure how to plan because you've never been taught...we can help! How about an entire podcast on how we plan for success every year?

What we cover:
  • 4 simple letters that will help you know what to make a priority for your life in 2017.
  • How to know where you are going to be in 25 years.
  • A detailed action plan including what you need to do today in order to make that long term vision become a reality.
  • Personality traits that you must develop to become successful.
