It's hard to believe but this episode 200! Thank you to everyone who has listened from the beginning and to all our new listeners as well. Today we're talking about a very difficult situation for parents. Nothing stings as much as the snide remarks of another parent (or family member) when they are speaking about your developmentally delayed child. "What's wrong with him?" "Why isn't she taking yet?" "Shouldn't he be walking by now?" I understand that these comments are with good and innocent intent (most of the time), but that doesn't mean that they don't leave you feeling like you are a complete failure and bad parent. This week a good friend of mine told me about a little girl who was about a year old and still couldn't lift her head up. The parents, 2 wonderful and extremely loving people, were beside themselves in despair, fear, and frustration. They didn't know what to do to help their little girl. I've learned, from experience, that most parents of children who are (or could be) delayed have no idea what they can do to help their suffering child. Noticing and diagnosing the delay is not the problem; finding a solution that helps your child get better is. Most parents are left frustrated and without knowing just how they can help. Let's change that. What we cover:

As we record, my wife Dr. Rachelle, is 5 days overdue. If you've ever listened to Life By Design, you know we don't like what that idea means as kids are born when they are ready. It's not fun watching her move around in extreme pain (and only getting worse) while her body is slowly getting ready to deliver our 2nd child. There is nothing fun about the back cramps, lack of sleep, shortness of breath, pain, swelling and lack of energy. If you've ever given or been around birth, you know this already. One thing you might not know is that the same hormones that cause you to hate life when you were getting ready to deliver are the very same ones that could ensure your baby has a healthy metabolism after they are born. This is really important since every chronic disease that is killing us (cancer, diabetes, heart disease, autoimmune disorders) can be connected in some way to broken metabolism and it is in your best interest to help your child in any way you can. The study found that stress hormones, produced only late in pregnancy and during labour, may also be responsible for helping your child metabolize fat, instead of sugar. This is just one possible effect of interfering with a cascade of chemicals that are part of the normal birthing process. What we cover:

Your brain is the most important part of your body. Every thought, emotion, pleasure, pain, accomplishment and more is experienced in your brain. Your brain controls your ability to pick up your children, do your job, train, eat, sleep, rest, watch TV, fight off an infection and everything else in between. Your brain runs everything from your lungs, metabolism, hormones, circulation, breathing and beyond. Your brain helps you learn, houses your consciousness, your personality, your potential and your abilities. Let's play it safe and say your brain is important. Heck, those functions are just scratching the surface of the incredible organ known as your brain. But, I find something very interesting... Smart people get insurance on everything that is valuable to them. They understand that you can't predict the future, but you can protect your assets to make sure you don't lose them. Your brain is your biggest asset...what are you doing to protect it? If you are like most people, the answer is nothing. I know I'm not being entirely fair since you've probably never been taught to take care of your brain. Research is starting to change that. One of the best ways to protect your brain is chiropractic care but it has always been a bit of an enigma to most of the population. I'm sure you know people that swear by it, maybe you've even heard of some amazing and unbelievable stories of people with serious health problems going to a chiropractor and finding success and relief even after seeing multiple medical providers. As it turns out, we are starting to realize how chiropractic has been able to perform all these miracles... as it turns out chiropractic change the way your brain works. What we covered:

As the year is starting to wind down, the internet is full of meme's proclaiming 2016 a disaster of a year. My favorite is the following: "Fidel Castro survived 857 attempted assassinations; he couldn't even survive 2016." Very funny, but also very sad. Of course, it's possible to have a year of hardship in which you experience loss, personal struggle, setbacks and even failure. However, I find it interesting that it's always the same people who experience the same failures, while the same people are getting more and more successful. One huge reason why you are not finding the success you've been wishing for year after year is due to your lack of planning. -Benjamin Franklin I know you've heard and maybe even said that exact phrase before. If you are an athlete of any kind and you had a nickel for every time your coach said it, you would be rich...well, maybe not rich but you get the point. If you know this is true then why aren't you busy preparing for success? This year I challenge you to take some time and plan to make 2017 the best year that you've ever had. The biggest challenge you face? You're unsure how to plan because you've never been taught...we can help! How about an entire podcast on how we plan for success every year? What we cover:

Every once in a while you find a piece of research that just makes you want to jump for joy - this was that study. For years at Life By Design, we have been talking about the importance of strength training to every aspect of your life. Bottom line: it's a requirement for an optimal body. In this University of Sydney study, researchers found that people from 55-85 years of age with mild cognitive dysfunction became smarter after 6 months of strength training. But that is not it...they also found that the subjects who strength trained had a bigger and different looking brains! The researchers were excited for what this could mean to people with neurodegenerative disorders like dementia and Alzheimer's. My favorite part of the study was that the subjects were put through a legitimate strength training program. That's quite rare in studies of this sort and it was wonderful to see for a change. The results speak for themselves.

A prestigious medical journal, The New England Journal Of Medicine, published a study claiming breast cancer is being over-diagnosed and the blame can be laid on mammograms. The head researcher questioned the whole screening process saying that 'screening is a choice, not a public health imperative.' His reasoning? According to his data, Dr. Welch concluded that many tumors or lumps found in breast tissue would never transform into metastatic breast cancer. He claims that tumor size is not as important as biological characteristics which imaging (mammograms included) can never show. Of course, this opinion does not go uncontested. Dr. Daniel Kopans argues that the data is flawed and mammograms are great screening tools. He mentions that breast cancer increased 1%/year from 1940 to 1980 and that screening is a life-saving procedure for most women. We did find it interesting that Dr. Daniel Kopans receives research grant money from GE Medical, who also happens to make equipment for mammograms. What we covered:

The people have spoken and the US election is over. However, a quick view of social media will tell you that the damage is just starting to happen now. I don't mean that in a political way. I mean that in the most personal way possible. People are losing their minds. There have been riots, hatred, families being torn apart by their differing political views, fear, panic attacks and even threats of moving to Canada. You are stressing yourself out and ruining your life and health over something you can't control and can't change. Entering into the stress response of fight or flight is the precursor to disease, early death and an abundance of mental anguish. To quote Bob Newhart from a classic Mad TV episode "Stop it!" Stop doing this to yourself. On this podcast, we discuss strategies to help snap you out of fear mode and get your head and body working properly again. What we cover:

If you were ever guilted into feeling bad about the choices you've made, how you look, what your interests are or how you choose to live your life, then this podcast is for you. As of late, shaming has been a hot topic all in the media on a worldwide scale. Interestingly enough, when doing the research I couldn't find a solid definition on 'shaming' much less two people who used the term to mean the same thing. We seem to have an idea of what 'shaming' means, but don't know specifically what exactly we're talking about. Not being able to define any problem is a huge challenge with finding a solution. One of the areas you may not have considered as even possible for people to shame is when others are trying to make the right decisions. Believe it or not, there is such a thing as health shaming, which means shaming for wanting or trying to be healthy. What we cover:

Picture for a second what you will feel like on December 26th... The day has just ended, you've been to at least 4 parties by now, ate tonnes of chocolates and sweets, been on your annual pub crawl and visited with friends and family. Better yet...you still have at least four more alcohol and dessert filled parties to go before it's all over. Yikes! This is just about the time when you start to feel tired and ashamed of your behaviour over the last month. You know that you haven't done anything good to your body, you're scared to see the number on the scale and you just can't stop. No wonder losing weight and joining the gym is the #1 most commonly set goal for the new year. It doesn't have to be that way. Is it possible for you to have your cake and eat it too? Is it possible to go to your parties, have fun, drink, eat and be merry while not gaining all that weight and feeling bad about yourself? That's what we cover on this week's podcast. We want to help you understand and apply the vital steps to having fun this holiday season without derailing your health and physical appearance. It's easier than you think. What we covered:

Every week, while putting together the information for the Life By Design Podcast, we do a lot of additional reading and learning. Here is what we were told: 1) Meat causes diabetes. 2) Whole grains reduce your chances of diabetes. 3) If you stop eating meat, you will get the right amount and the right type of protein.
